What are bodies?
There’s the instant association with physicality, but a human body is something we can’t experience directly. Our body awareness is constructed by sensations of the mind and this creative activity is not physical at all. Bodies are all over the earth as pools of water and peaks of rock. There are celestial bodies floating above us and tiny bodies growing in yesterday’s coffee. Colourfully, I might describe your body as a wonderland. Does that help at all?
In the cracks between these various applications of the word is where we find our parallels.
Mortal Coils is an exhibit of twelve different artists from Toronto exploring bodies and the contexts that surround them. These short videos are themselves, parts of a whole, a landscape at work, a living & breathing entity that is a body in its own right.
